Protect and unlock PDFs

🔒

Add password protection

Encrypt your PDF with AES-256 (NIST standard). Anyone opening the file will need the password you set — in Adobe Reader, Chrome, or any viewer.

🔓

Remove PDF password

If you know the current password, open the PDF in the editor and re-download without a password set. The protection is permanently removed — no third-party server involved, unlike Adobe Acrobat online.

🛡

Set permission restrictions

Use an owner password to restrict printing, copying, and editing — recommended by the NCSC and relevant for GDPR Article 32 compliance.

Frequently asked questions

How do I password protect a PDF?

Open your PDF in the editor, click Download PDF, and choose "Set password". Enter your desired password and download the protected file. The PDF will require the password to open in any PDF viewer.

How do I remove a password from a PDF?

If you know the current password: open the locked PDF in the editor (enter the password when prompted), then download the file without setting a new password — the protection is removed from the downloaded copy.

How do I unlock a PDF?

To unlock a PDF you own, open it in the editor with the owner password, then re-download it without protection. Note: PDFTheGuide cannot crack or bypass passwords on PDFs you do not own.

What encryption does PDF password protection use?

The editor applies AES-256 encryption, the strongest standard defined in ISO 32000-2 (PDF 2.0). This is the same encryption algorithm used by Adobe Acrobat and recommended by NIST as a federal encryption standard.

Can I restrict printing or copying without a password?

Yes. PDF permission flags let you set an owner password that restricts printing, copying text, and editing — while still allowing the file to open without a password. See our PDF Permissions glossary entry for details. HowToGeek explains the limits of permission-only protection — owner passwords can be bypassed by determined users with the right tools.

Is password-protecting a PDF required by GDPR or HIPAA?

Password protection alone is generally not sufficient for GDPR Article 32 compliance or HIPAA, but it is a useful layer of access control for documents containing personal data. Combine encryption with secure transmission (TLS) and access logging for full compliance. The UK's NCSC guidance on protecting personal data recommends encryption at rest for sensitive documents.

Is the password processing secure?

Yes. All encryption is done in your browser using client-side JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your password and your file are never sent to any server — unlike Adobe Acrobat online or pdfgear.com, which upload your file for processing.

How do I deactivate a password in a PDF?

Open the PDF in the editor using the current password, then click Download PDF and leave the password field blank. The downloaded file will have no password protection. As Lifewire details, this is the standard method for removing a known password from a PDF.
